After sixty-eight spotless years on the job, the legendary Mr. Clean has officially announced he is “hanging up his whites” and retiring.
The iconic mascot—whose full name is actually Veritably Clean—revealed the news in a staged press conference, telling fans he is ready to trade his sponges for new hobbies.
Mr. Clean broke the news himself on social media. He said, “The rumors are true! I’m retiring and saying goodbye to the world of cleaning… I’ve earned a little time off.”
Fans shouldn’t panic about their kitchen counters just yet, as Procter & Gamble confirms the famous cleaning products are staying exactly where they are on store shelves.
While the muscle-bound “grime-fighter” is off to new adventures, the company says there are no plans to change the brand name or the product’s classic packaging.
Many industry experts suspect the retirement is a clever marketing stunt, noting that a “bigger announcement” about the character’s future is scheduled for March 4th.
For now, the brand is supporting its mascot’s decision, with an announcer during the event noting that after a career with “zero stains on the record,” he’s finally ready for a break.
